The U.S. Departments of State, Agriculture, and Commerce have issued joint letters to U.S. governors and American business leaders encouraging expanded engagement with Taiwan on trade, investment, education, tourism, and disaster preparedness — affirming that such engagement is fully consistent with U.S. policy under the Taiwan Relations Act.

The letter to governors highlights the unique role state and local governments can play in deepening these ties, including cooperation on disaster preparedness and critical infrastructure resilience. The letter to business leaders emphasizes the wide range of commercial opportunities available and encourages companies to engage with U.S. government resources for guidance.

Both letters underscore the importance and depth of U.S.-Taiwan partnership. Taiwan is the United States' fourth-largest trading partner, a global leader in advanced manufacturing and the digital economy, and a historic partner in trade, investment, and people-to-people ties.

Additionally, the letters caution that China's embassy and consulates have contacted state offices and private businesses to discourage engagement with Taiwan, often mischaracterizing U.S. policy. State and local officials and business leaders who receive such pressure are encouraged to contact the Department of State directly for assistance.
